Challenge

At an event with 55,000 attendees, our challenge was to efficiently manage the flow of guests in and out of headsets while ensuring minimal wait times.

Solution

To efficiently manage the flow of attendees in and out of headsets and ensure minimal wait times, we implemented a mixed reality experience instead of virtual reality. This allowed attendees to see their friends and family, which parents especially appreciated as they could keep track of their kids.

We developed an anchor system to precisely place game art and gameplay, making the play space feel much larger than it actually was.

Challenge

Create a unique experience that immerses users into the world of Spongebob Squarepants without making them feel they are separated from the conference and their friends. A lot of people are hesitant to put on their headset because they are afraid of being separated from their friends. 

Solution

Opting for mixed reality instead of virtual reality, we seamlessly integrated the real world with the animated realm of SpongeBob, enhancing the appeal for conference attendees less familiar with the character.

Designing the experience to be modular, every piece of game art could be replicated and placed, allowing us to transform the entire booth into a version of Bikini Bottom that blended seamlessly with the conference environment.

Challenge

Needing to create an experience enjoyable for all ages demands careful balance of entertainment, engagement, and accessibility, ensuring both children and adults find value and enjoyment.

Solution

To address the challenge of creating an experience enjoyable for all ages, we prioritized inclusivity by setting the height of jellyfish based on the user's head position, ensuring that participants of all sizes could fully engage and enjoy the immersion.

Additionally, drawing inspiration from successful VR games, we meticulously crafted an intuitive game mechanic and scoring system that could be easily understood by users of all ages within seconds of entering the experience, enhancing accessibility and enjoyment for both children and adults.

At VidCon, SpongeBob has delighted attendees with meet-and-greets, panels, and exclusive content, showcasing his enduring popularity among digital content creators and fans alike. 

For the 2023 conference, we were tasked with leveraging the capabilities of mixed reality to immerse fans in an unforgettable jellyfishing experience set in Bikini Bottom.

Results

The XR experience garnered enthusiastic praise from conference attendees, drawing a steady stream of excited participants eager to immerse themselves in the world of SpongeBob, making it a standout attraction amidst the event. The competitive spirit was palpable as users vied to set the high score, prompting many to wait in line to revisit the experience multiple times throughout the multi-day event, captivated by the challenge and thrill of achieving victory.
